چکیده

Much confusion surrounds the concept of hormesisand what its biological meaning represents. This paperprovides a definition of hormesis that addresses itshistorical foundations, quantitative features, and under-lying evolutionaryand toxicologically-based mechanisticstrategies. Hormesis should be considered an adaptiveresponse characterized by biphasic dose responses ofgenerally similar quantitative features with respect toamplitude and range of the stimulatory response that areeither directly induced or the result of compensatorybiological processes following an initial disruption inhomeostasis. Given the limited magnitude of the stimula-tory response (i.e., usually 30-60% greater than controlsat maximum), heightened study design and replicationrequirements are often necessary to ensure reliablejudgments on causality. Even though hormesis is consid-ered an adaptive response, the issue of beneficial/harmful effects should not be part of the definition ofhormesis, but reserved to a subsequent evaluation of thebiological and ecological context of the response.

Reactive Oxygen Species and Antioxidant in Seminal Plasma and Their Impact on Male Fertility

Spermatozoa generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in physiological amounts which play a role in sperm functions during sperm capacitation acrosome reaction (AR) and oocyte fusion. In addition damaged sperm are likely to be the source of ROS. The most important ROS produced by human sperm are hydrogen peroxide superoxide anion and hydroxyl radicals. Besides human seminal plasma and sperm posses...

نقش استرس اکسیداتیو در تکثیر بی‌رویه و مرگ سلولی

Abstract During normal cellular activities Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS) are produced. In addition to beneficial functions they play a critical role in cell death and prevent apoptosis. Every cell is equipped with an extensive antioxidant defense system to combat the excessive production of active radicals. Oxidative stress occurs with destruction of cellu...

Effect of Antibiotics and/or Chemotherapy on Generation of Reactive Oxygen Intermediate by Neutrophils

Dear Editor, The O2-generating enzyme NADPH oxidase, plays a crucial role in host defense against microbial infection through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).1The multisubunit NADPH oxidase complex can be detected in vitro by the nitroblue tetrazolium test (NBT).2The NBT test is used for the diagnosis of chronic granulomatous disease.3 However, several factors, such as some cyto...

Reactive oxygen species generation and use of antioxidants during in vitro maturation of oocytes: a Review

In vitro maturation (IVM) is emerging as a popular technology at the forefront of fertility treatment and preservation. However, standard in vitro culture conditions usually increase reactive oxygen species (ROS), which have been implicated as one of the major causes for reduced embryonic developmental competence. It is well-known that higher than physiological levels of ROS triggers granulosa ...

Protective effect of Viola tricolor and Viola odorata extracts on serum/glucose deprivation-induced neurotoxicity: role of reactive oxygen species

Objective: Oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathophysiology of brain ischemia and neurodegenerative disorders.Previous studies indicated that Viola tricolor and Viola odorataare rich sources of antioxidants. This study aimed to determine whether these plants protect neurons against serum/glucose deprivation (SGD)-induced cell death in an in vitro model of ischemia and neurodegeneration....
